ARM RVCT Compiler (RealView Compilation Tools) is a proprietary C/C++ and assembly toolchain for building high-performance, size-optimized software on ARM-based embedded systems. Widely used in firmware, bootloaders, drivers, and RTOS applications, it provides tight control over code generation and memory layout for resource-constrained targets.

Key capabilities:

  • Optimizing C/C++ compiler for classic ARM and Thumb/Thumb-2 instruction sets
  • Support for ARM EABI, ELF output, and DWARF debugging information
  • Intrinsics and inline assembly for VFP and NEON (where supported by the target)
  • Scatter-loading and fine-grained memory placement via scatter files
  • Standard and “microlib” C libraries to balance functionality and code size
  • Semihosting support and compatibility with bare-metal and RTOS environments
  • Integration with ARM/Keil development flows as well as makefile-based builds
  • Available for Windows and Linux hosts with node-locked or floating licenses

Note: RVCT is considered a legacy toolchain and has been superseded in many workflows by newer ARM compilers (for example, Arm Compiler 5/6). It remains relevant for maintaining existing products and codebases that rely on its code generation and libraries.

ARM RVCT Compiler is developed by Hitachi GST HDDTools Group. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 3.1 and 4.1.
